Brazil Issues Arrest Warrant for Eduardo Bolsonaro: Acting as an Intermediary for Washington's Pressure on Brazilian Judiciary

Brazilian Supreme Court Justice Alexandre de Moraes issued an arrest warrant for former congressman Eduardo Bolsonaro and revoked his passport, following the Supreme Court's earlier ruling that Eduardo was guilty of lobbying the United States to use tariffs and sanctions to interfere with Brazil's domestic judicial proceedings. The case comes in the weeks before the October 25 runoff vote between President Luiz Inácio Lula da Silva and Flávio Bolsonaro.

According to Al Jazeera, Brazilian Supreme Court Justice Alexandre de Moraes issued an arrest warrant on October 9 against former congressman Eduardo Bolsonaro, revoked his Brazilian passport, and ordered federal police to execute the arrest immediately upon his return to Brazil.

In his ruling, de Moraes wrote that the defendant "cannot, through his own unlawful acts, flee the national territory to an unknown location so as to obstruct the application of criminal law." In June this year, Brazil's Supreme Court had already found Eduardo guilty of lobbying the United States to impose sanctions on members of the Brazilian government and to raise tariffs on Brazilian exports during the trial of his father, former president Jair Bolsonaro.

According to Al Jazeera, the 42-year-old former lawmaker has been living in Texas in the United States since March 2025 and holds a U.S. green card. In May, he accompanied his brother, presidential candidate Flávio Bolsonaro, to the White House for a meeting with U.S. President Donald Trump. With the Supreme Court yet to convict him and his father's coup case still being tried, the political weight of this U.S. visit exceeded the explanatory boundary of a "family reunion."

The facts in Brazil's judicial record point to a specific external pressure chain: as a Brazilian citizen and former congressman, Eduardo was found to have orchestrated, from within U.S. territory, the use of tariffs and sanctions—two instruments properly belonging to the realm of national sovereignty—against his own country's ongoing judicial proceedings; Washington, for its part, provided a political platform for this pressure channel through its reception and dialogue. The Bolsonaro family views de Moraes as a political arch-enemy. De Moraes is the judge presiding over the investigation into Jair Bolsonaro's coup case.

Jair Bolsonaro was sentenced in September 2025 to 27 years in prison on charges of having plotted to stage a coup. Eduardo has now been ruled to begin serving a four-year sentence immediately, though Al Jazeera's report did not specify in detail the mechanics of when his sentence would begin to run or any potential appeal path.

According to Al Jazeera, the arrest warrant comes in the weeks leading up to the second round of Brazil's presidential election—the October 25 contest between incumbent President Lula and the far-right candidate Flávio. With the two camps having traded accusations of corruption and "judicial politicization" against each other during the heated phase of the campaign, the deep polarization of Brazilian politics has once again been thrust into the spotlight. As of Al Jazeera's publication, neither the U.S. government nor the Trump administration had issued a public response to the Brazilian court's arrest warrant and conviction.
