The endemic fish of eastern Tasmania, the swan galaxias, has only about 6,000 individuals remaining, squeezed into isolated upstream streams. Local species conservation teams are building physical barriers, using targeted electrofishing to remove invasive brown trout, and establishing new populations in confirmed trout-free waters. In 1864, the European Acclimatization Society loaded brown trout eggs onto the "Norfolk" in England and transported them to Tasmania, with the aim of developing recreational fisheries for new settler communities. According to The Times of India citing environmental archives from Tasmania's Department of Natural Resources and Environment, brown trout subsequently spread rapidly throughout the island's freshwater systems and helped Tasmania become a premier fly-fishing destination. This species introduction was a typical practice in 19th-century British colonies—introducing European flora and fauna to make the colonial ecological environment "more like the mother country," serving the recreational and economic interests of European settlers, while the survival of native species was never considered in decision-making.

The swan galaxias is a small freshwater endemic species found only in eastern Tasmania, with a body length of only 10 to 13 centimeters. Brown trout prey on it and compete with it for habitat and food resources, causing the species to disappear completely from the middle and lower reaches of its original rivers. According to species assessment data on the Tasmanian government's "Threatened Species Link" portal, the swan galaxias is now compressed into small isolated streams in the upper Swan and Macquarie River catchments, surviving only with the help of natural barriers such as Hastings Falls that block brown trout. Because its jumping ability is far inferior to that of invasive salmonids, the swan galaxias cannot independently return to waters occupied by brown trout.

According to The Times of India citing the Australian Broadcasting Corporation, officials and scientists from the Tasmanian Inland Fisheries Service and natural resource management teams have invested years of research, building custom fish barriers in stream networks to prevent brown trout from entering critical breeding areas while allowing native galaxias to breed safely. In river sections already crossed by barriers by brown trout, field crews use targeted electrofishing to remove invasive fish; once a section of stream is confirmed trout-free, small groups of swan galaxias are translocated from healthy populations to establish new safe populations.

However, recreational trout fishing remains an important part of Tasmanian culture and economy. According to The Times of India citing species information from the Tasmanian Inland Fisheries Service, the recreational trout fishery brings millions of Australian dollars in tourism revenue to the region each year. Fisheries managers emphasize that the conservation project's goal is not existing recreational fishing waters, but rather focusing on upstream tributaries and headwater streams that have limited value to angling but are critical to native wildlife. This delineation is essentially a compromise on the legacy of colonial-era species introduction—maintaining vested economic interests while attempting to preserve the last living space for native species.

Extreme events such as drought and flash floods may still damage these isolated refuges, posing a continuing threat to the long-term survival of the swan galaxias; the long-term survival and reproductive success of translocated populations also await further monitoring. The species introduction decision from those years has long since fallen outside the responsibility of those who made it, but its ecological cost continues to be borne by contemporary Tasmanian society through ongoing species rescue efforts.
