According to Africa News, data released by the Palestinian Ministry of Education on the 8th show that since the outbreak of the Gaza war on October 7, 2023, more than 20,000 Palestinian students and educators have been killed across the Gaza Strip and the occupied West Bank, with the entire education system being subjected to systematic destruction.

Citing itemized figures from the Palestinian Ministry of Education, Africa News reported that in the Gaza Strip, more than 19,000 school-age children and 1,300 university students have died in the conflict, alongside more than 800 school staff and 240 university faculty members. In the occupied West Bank, the ministry counted 134 school-age children and 39 university students killed, as well as 7 school staff members dead.

The destruction of school infrastructure is equally staggering. According to Africa News, the Palestinian Ministry of Education stated that more than 179 government-run schools in the Gaza Strip have been completely destroyed, and another 105 schools operated by the United Nations Relief and Works Agency for Palestine Refugees in the Near East (UNRWA) have been damaged. Under the long-standing blockade and continuous military strikes, Gaza's primary, secondary, and higher education network has been brought to the brink of collapse.

Africa News also cited overall casualty figures from the Gaza authorities: since the outbreak of the war, nearly 74,000 Palestinians have been killed and more than 174,000 injured, with approximately 90 percent of Gaza's civilian infrastructure destroyed. The report noted that for millions of Gaza residents, the war has not only taken lives but also destroyed the schools, universities, and the entire education system that should have been shaping the next generation.

The above figures were all provided by the Palestinian Ministry of Education and the Gaza authorities and originate from the statistical accounts of parties to the conflict. Due to Gaza's prolonged blockade and large-scale military operations, independent verification of itemized data in the education sector has been difficult for outside parties, and the overall death toll cited by Africa News also differs from figures previously released by some international organizations or by Israel. Against the backdrop of ongoing conflict and restricted access for journalists, these numbers remain the most systematic disclosure currently available from the administrative bodies of the parties involved.

What the Palestinian Ministry of Education's data points to goes beyond the collapse of buildings and the loss of lives. In a civilian society already struggling under blockade, the comprehensive devastation of the education system means that an entire generation of children has had its classrooms bombed, university laboratories reduced to ruins, and the teaching workforce uprooted, while students in the occupied West Bank have not been spared either. When more than one hundred schools are erased from the map, what is damaged is not merely bricks and mortar, but the transmission of knowledge and the institutional foundations that Palestinian society needs for self-reconstruction—a reality that no ceasefire agreement or rebuilding plan can afford to bypass.
