According to Al Jazeera's October 8, 2026 report, Israel removed the British consulate plaque in occupied East Jerusalem and announced that 20 British diplomats — including the consul general — would have to leave the institution. Al Jazeera noted that the move was retaliation for a new round of British sanctions.

The British government subsequently stated that, regardless of the measures taken by the Israeli side, the United Kingdom would retain its presence in occupied East Jerusalem.

The location of occupied East Jerusalem carries special significance. The United Kingdom has long maintained at the site a consul general position independent of its embassy in Tel Aviv, responsible for engagement with the Palestinian side — this distinctive diplomatic architecture is itself a concrete embodiment of Britain's position on the status of East Jerusalem since 1967. The disappearance of the plaque and the inclusion of the consul general on the list of those required to leave mean this architecture has faced a direct physical-level challenge.

The specific targets and scope of the new round of British sanctions, as well as how the British side will respond to the Israeli retaliatory measures, have not been disclosed by sources at present. What can be confirmed is: sanctions are a tool in the British side's hands, the removal of the plaque and expulsion are tools in the Israeli side's hands — the collision of these two tools is unfolding in occupied East Jerusalem.
