Mount Kenya Wildfire Burn Area Reaches 8,700 Hectares; Cause of Fire Still Not Announced
According to Africanews, since first reported on September 1, the ongoing wildfire on Mount Kenya has burned approximately 8,700 hectares of vegetation, and the cause has not yet been announced by authorities. The fire threatens forests, wetlands and alpine ecosystems within a UNESCO World Heritage Site, as well as wildlife including the critically endangered mountain bongo, and communities in central and eastern Kenya that rely on the mountain for water.
According to Africanews, since the fire was first reported on September 1, the ongoing wildfire spreading across Mount Kenya has burned approximately 8,700 hectares of vegetation. The cause of the fire has not yet been announced by authorities.
Africanews, citing the environmental organization Mount Kenya Trust, reported that multiple firefighting teams were still working on Tuesday of this week to contain remaining flames. Participants include the Mount Kenya Trust, the Kenya Forest Service, the Kenya Wildlife Service, the Kenya Defence Forces, the Lewa Wildlife Conservancy, and the NGO Rhino Ark. Local community members participated in ground operations, while Tropic Air provided air support.
The fire has raised concerns about possible damage to wildlife, water sources, and fragile high-altitude habitats. Mount Kenya National Park and its surrounding natural forests are part of a UNESCO World Heritage Site, encompassing forests, wetlands, and alpine ecosystems. Rivers originating from the mountain provide water for communities, farms, and wildlife in parts of central and eastern Kenya; if the catchment areas are damaged, downstream water security will face cascading impacts.
The broader Mount Kenya ecosystem is home to various threatened wildlife species, including the critically endangered mountain bongo. The mountain rises to 5,199 meters, making it the highest peak in Kenya and the second highest in Africa, after Mount Kilimanjaro (5,895 meters) in neighboring Tanzania. Its equatorial alpine ecosystem, glaciers, and biodiversity give the mountain global environmental significance.
Assessments of the burned area, the location of the fire's origin, and the specific damage to high-altitude habitats and water sources remain pending further announcements from the relevant agencies.
