According to a September 10 report by NPR, the European Union's climate service, the Copernicus Climate Change Service, confirmed that day that the global average temperature in August 2026 reached 16.96 degrees Celsius, tying with July 2023 within the margin of uncertainty as the hottest month on record. This figure is 1.65 degrees Celsius higher than pre-industrial levels, far exceeding the 1.5-degree temperature rise threshold set by the 2015 Paris Agreement.

Citing Copernicus data, NPR noted that all eight hottest months on record globally have occurred since July 2023. In other words, since scientists issued their most dire warnings, the Earth has not cooled but has instead accelerated its warming.

The contiguous United States has just experienced its hottest summer on record. According to NPR, the U.S. National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration (NOAA) announced on September 10 that the average temperature across the contiguous 48 U.S. states from June to August 2026 reached 23.54 degrees Celsius, surpassing for the first time a record that had stood for 90 years, set during the 1936 Dust Bowl era. The U.S. average temperature in August 2026 reached 24.21 degrees Celsius, with the average daytime high reaching 31.42 degrees Celsius, both setting new historical records; July similarly broke long-held records from the Dust Bowl era. Globally, the Northern Hemisphere summer of 2026 ties with 2024 as the hottest on record.

In explaining the causes, multiple climate scientists emphasized to NPR that El Niño—a short-term warming caused by the natural warming of parts of the equatorial Pacific—contributes only about 0.1 to 0.2 degrees Celsius to global temperatures, with the vast majority of the remaining warming coming from greenhouse gases emitted by the human burning of coal, oil, and natural gas.

Andrew Dessler, a climate scientist at Texas A&M University, wrote in an email to NPR: "It is time to stop acting surprised that our planet keeps getting warmer. This is happening exactly as predicted decades ago. The real question of concern is not whether we will continue to break high-temperature records—we will—but whether we will take any action, or stand there and let the climate train run us over."

Samantha Burgess, strategic climate lead at the Copernicus Climate Service, issued a warning from heat-wave-stricken Britain: "Our climate system is indeed operating outside the range expected just a decade ago. We have moved from climate change being an abstract thing that might affect the Global South or distant regions, to climate change affecting and disrupting our daily lives—schools closing, hospitals overwhelmed, roads melting, railways buckling. In fact, we will experience more such situations than this summer."

Burgess's statement reveals a long-avoided structural problem: the fossil fuel energy system built by wealthy industrialized countries, after long offloading the costs of the climate crisis onto the Global South, is now beginning to backlash against the operations of developed countries themselves. More than a decade has passed since the signing of the Paris Agreement, the energy structure of major emitting economies has not undergone fundamental transformation, and the 1.5-degree temperature rise threshold has been far exceeded in the latest monthly data.

NPR reported that the global ocean monthly average temperature in August 2026 tied the hottest month record set in March 2024, while August 22 set the hottest single day ever recorded for the global ocean. Scientists emphasized that the ocean absorbs the vast majority of excess heat, and that continued ocean temperature increases mean climate change is accelerating.

Friederike Otto, a climate scientist at Imperial College London, told NPR: "Although El Niño is intensifying the high temperatures, the fundamental driver remains our relentless burning of fossil fuels. Climate change makes every El Niño hotter. Unless we stop burning coal, oil, and natural gas, these record-breaking months will continue to occur."

Simon Stiell, the United Nations climate chief, warned: "Unless humanity stops burning massive amounts of coal, oil, and natural gas, the resulting pollution will continue to bake our planet, extreme heat will continue to break historical records, causing millions of deaths and trillions of dollars in losses, impacting transportation and healthcare systems, and driving up prices for household necessities such as food. This is the spiraling cost of humanity's fossil fuel addiction, and the global climate crisis it is fueling."

NPR cited analysis by Zeke Hausfather, a climate scientist at Berkeley Earth, noting that 2026 is very likely to surpass 2024 as the warmest year on record, with 2027 almost certain to exceed both, driven by an unprecedented strong El Niño event, with the annual temperature rise potentially reaching 1.8 degrees Celsius above pre-industrial levels. Burgess added that the temperature rise on some days may touch the higher 2-degree threshold.
