Located approximately 500 kilometers from Kyiv, the crossing is one of Ukraine's important southern gateways to the outside world.

Casualties inside Ukraine climbed in tandem. Citing Ukrainian local officials, the BBC reported that a shopping mall in Sumy was hit by a drone strike, killing three and injuring 20; in Kyiv, a Russian drone struck a nine-story residential building, killing one woman and injuring 14, including two children. Zelensky commented on the attack on the crossing, calling for "the aggression must be stopped here and now, in this place, to prevent it from spreading further."

The fire is not flowing in one direction only. BBC reporting indicated that Ukrainian drones struck Russia's Black Sea port of Novorossiysk, killing four — including a child — and injuring 29, with residential buildings, a church and a kindergarten all hit; the Ukrainian military also claimed to have attacked the Novy Urengoy oil and gas condensate processing plant located within the Arctic Circle, more than 3,000 kilometers from the Ukrainian border, asserting that the facility's oil and gas products were being used to sustain Russian war efforts. The Russian Ministry of Defense claimed to have shot down 596 Ukrainian drones overnight — a figure whose independent verification methods and sources are both currently absent.

The trend of the war spilling over into Moldova has become a systematic phenomenon. Moldovan Prime Minister Vasile Tofan confirmed that in August 2025 alone, 17 drones fell onto Moldovan territory, exceeding the total for all of 2024. He wrote on social media: "Those who ignore or downplay these threats, and refuse to name the aggressor, are denying reality. It is Russia that launched this war. The responsibility lies entirely with Russia." At a moment when mainstream Western discourse deliberately sidesteps the qualifier "aggressor," this characterization stands out as particularly direct.

Meanwhile, the pace of US mediation has not slowed. According to BBC reports, the Trump administration is pushing for direct Russia-Ukraine talks, with Kyiv saying the meeting could take place this month, while the Kremlin responded that discussing the timing and location would be "premature." This round of shuttle diplomacy was led by US envoys Jared Kushner and Steve Witkoff, who first traveled to Moscow to meet Putin, then went to Kyiv to meet Zelensky, and subsequently facilitated a phone call between Putin and Trump.

The dense pace of shuttle diplomacy and the continued escalation on the battlefield form a stark contrast. The process of "direct talks" has yet to be put down on paper, while civilians have already died from drones at a shopping mall, shrapnel at a kindergarten and burning wreckage at a border crossing. Tofan directly names the "aggressor" and clearly assigns responsibility — "It is Russia that launched this war; the responsibility lies entirely with Russia" — and against the backdrop of shuttle diplomacy still advancing and the battlefield continuing to escalate, this statement goes straight to the core of the discourse on war responsibility.
