According to Al Jazeera, an explosion occurred on the 12th near the community of Neot Mordechai in northern Israel, close to the Lebanese border, killing one person and injuring 19 others. The deceased was a 15-year-old high school student on an annual school trip.

Israel's Foreign Minister Gideon Saar confirmed the identity of the deceased. The explosion occurred between Kibbutz Manara and Kibbutz Yiftach, and the injured include students and staff from a religious high school in the northern city of Maalot-Tarshiha.

Israeli Defense Minister Israel Katz wrote on the social media platform X that he "shares the deep grief of the family of the boy killed in the explosion near the northern border and wishes all the injured a swift and full recovery," and stated that authorities are investigating the cause of the explosion.

The Israeli military has dispatched helicopters to the area. AFP, citing Israeli sources, reported that a preliminary examination indicates the explosion "may have been caused by unexploded ordnance fired by Hezbollah." Israeli police, citing medical sources, had earlier said that "preliminary suspicion is that it was caused by unexploded ordnance, and approximately 20 people were injured to varying degrees." However, the exact source of the incident has not been definitively confirmed.

Israeli Prime Minister Netanyahu stated via the X platform that he had traveled to Rambam Hospital in Haifa to visit the injured, and urged "all Israeli citizens: strictly follow the Home Front Command's instructions and under no circumstances touch any remnants or suspicious objects."

Al Jazeera reporter Nour Odeh, reporting from Ramallah in the occupied West Bank, noted that Israeli political leaders were rapidly mobilized following the incident, with Netanyahu heading to the scene and National Security Minister Ben Gvir canceling scheduled political engagements. The report said some of the injured are in critical condition, but specific details are limited.

The explosion lays bare the structural threat that ongoing military operations pose to civilians. Al Jazeera reported that the Upper Galilee region and the Lebanese border have been active zones of Israeli military operations, with "thousands of munitions" used in the area over the past three years. In a region that has endured prolonged, high-intensity combat, large quantities of unexploded ordnance remain, posing a lethal risk to local community residents and even to school groups entering the area, whether on the Israeli side or the Lebanese side.

The deeper context lies in the fact that since Israel launched its genocidal war on Gaza in 2023, Hezbollah in Lebanon began firing rockets toward northern Israel, forcing tens of thousands of Israeli residents from their homes. Al Jazeera reported that due to a "lack of confidence in the government's ability to protect them," most residents have not yet returned. Many have personally witnessed the widespread destruction that rockets have inflicted on their communities, and according to the report, they have not been encouraged to return because the situation remains unstable.

In March this year, the Israeli army began occupying southern Lebanon after hostilities escalated once again, triggered by a US-Israeli war against Iran. The report pointed out that the Israeli military continues to strike Hezbollah targets, while Hezbollah militants occasionally fire rockets into Israel, and the problem of unexploded ordnance is spreading systematically across the region.
