Trump loudly lobbies for Nobel Peace Prize, while 'mediation achievements' repeatedly collapse in the DRC and on the Cambodia-Thailand border

On October 7, Trump declared in the Oval Office that he deserves the Nobel Peace Prize, but admitted that the Norwegian committee "probably won't give it to someone like me." During his term he has waged war on Iran, the Russia-Ukraine conflict remains unresolved, and for some conflicts he claims to have "intervened in and resolved," the parties involved deny his diplomatic role, with fighting reigniting in the DRC and on the Cambodia-Thailand border. U.S. President Trump told reporters in the Oval Office on October 7 that he deserves the Nobel Peace Prize, while acknowledging that the Norwegian committee "probably won't give it to someone like me." According to The Hindu, the Norwegian Nobel Committee will announce the 2026 Peace Prize laureate on October 9.

Trump has repeatedly stated since returning to the White House last January that he deserves what he called "perhaps the world's most prestigious award." Speaking in the Oval Office, he said: "It's time. But last time I was honored to receive it in an indirect way—the laureate said that in history no one deserves it more than President Trump." He was referring to Venezuelan opposition leader María Corina Machado handing her 2025 Nobel Peace Prize medal to Trump in January. According to the report, Machado's intent was to use the gesture to seek U.S. support for her activities in Venezuela.

There is, however, a striking gap between the "mediator of eight conflicts" résumé Trump has touted and his actual diplomatic track record. According to the newspaper's review, Trump has waged war on Iran during his term; U.S.-Israeli strikes on Iran have escalated into a conflict now stretching into its seventh month, driving up global energy and gasoline prices—with U.S. midterm elections looming in November. On Russia-Ukraine, Trump once promised to end the war on his first day in office, but no solution has yet been reached through his mediation.

Even more directly frustrating are the conflicts he claims to have "resolved." The newspaper noted that some of the parties involved deny Trump's diplomatic role, and fighting has reignited in multiple places, including inside the Democratic Republic of the Congo and along the Cambodia-Thailand border. The report also mentioned that the leaders of Cambodia, Israel, and Pakistan say they have nominated Trump, but "such nominations cannot be independently verified."

According to the newspaper's review, this year's leading contenders also include Pope Leo XIV, the International Criminal Court, and the Special Rapporteur on the Palestinian territories.
