UO said French police reported no major incidents nationwide Monday night. Protesters called for continued protests this coming Saturday, but France's main trade unions have not yet supported the call. Union officials plan to meet Lecornu on Wednesday, while the prime minister is due to discuss the protests with political parties on Thursday. The public disagreement makes the next phase of mobilization uncertain, and whether unions support the next round of action will also be a practical indicator of how the government responds.

As part of the government's anti-stolen-goods response, social media platforms have also been brought in. France's digital minister Anne Le Hzn plans to meet platform executives on Tuesday; she previously said that items taken during robberies over the weekend were being sold online and called on platforms to remove the relevant goods. The report did not explain the scope of the notices, the review criteria or the appeals procedure. Platforms can help disrupt the circulation of stolen goods, but they cannot replace public authorities in enforcing curfews, policing and accountability.

Compared with the security measures, the students' demands for housing, food and educational conditions are closer to the demonstrations' central demands. These proportions have not been independently verified and cannot be treated directly as national statistics. The report also did not record the government's response to these claims or set out any measures to address prices or invest in education. Pressure on housing and food will not ease by itself because of a curfew; suppressing nighttime gatherings through security measures is not the same as responding to students' living conditions.

The approaching election has added pressure to the conflict. Al Jazeera English placed the protests ahead of next April and May's presidential election and said that Marine Le Pen, leader of France's National Rally, was leading the opinion polls, with Jean-Luc Mélenchon, leader of France Unbowed, in second place. The report said both had been accused of exploiting the protests, but did not provide further material. Electoral pressure cannot by itself explain the security response, but it can intensify the conflict between restricting protests and competing for votes.

Wednesday's talks with the unions and Thursday's talks with the political parties will be testing points: whether specific policy commitments emerge on the cost of living and education. So far, the reported response has focused on curfews, arrests and platforms' removal of information about stolen goods.
